MARY MAGDALENE IN THE CATHAR COUNTRY

MARY MAGDALENE IN THE CATHAR COUNTRY

What is catharism ?

It is a religious movement in the medieval Christian West after the Gregorian reform. Catharism is another way of considering the reading of the Bible as well as a different Christianity from that advocated by Roman Catholicism of the 12th century.
Indeed, this dissident movement was in contradiction with the dogma of the Catholic Church which will consider it as a heresy.

What are the believes about Mary Magdalene in the Cathar country ?

Many works, especially Anglo-Saxon, make the Cathars the keepers of secrets concerning Mary Magdalene. Does this claim have any historical basis, or is it just another myth among the countless false truths about heretics by a literary genre in search of the sensational?
The study of the figure of Mary Magdalene among the Cathars, insofar as no Cathar text has reached us, seems from the outset doomed to failure. Only seems, because if we do not have an original Cathar text, we have, on the other hand, the writings of their adversaries, the Catholics faithful to the Pope who led the Inquisition. Of course, these texts are of great help to us, because many of them denounce the existence of traditions on Mary Magdalene among the Cathars.

Purpose and topics of these lectures

The phenomenon of Languedoc Catharism is vast and very complex.
Not only because it spanned nearly three centuries during which it experienced many twists and turns. But also because it involved, to varying degrees of commitment, all strata of Occitan society of its time.
Naturally, the purpose of the lectures is not to study the smallest details of a religion, a military crusade, and inquisitorial work aimed at eradicating the Cathar heresy. But, to have a sufficiently objective view on the various subjects.
