Pilgrimage to Saint Baume Mountain : the grotto and the basilica

The first signs of an existing pilgrimage to Sainte-Baume mountain date back to the 9th century. But it is from the discovery of the relics of Mary Magdalene in the 13th century that many pilgrims come to Sainte-Baume to pray to her.
I suggest you take the path that leads to the top of the mountain where the saint would have lived.
Indeed, after having landed in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, preached in Aix en Provence and Marseille, Marie-Madeleine would have spent the last thirty years of her life here.
She died after 30 years of a mystical life in that grotto. She was buried by her friend Maximin in a small oratory which is now the crypt of the basilica. The place where her relics are kept.
