A gentle initiation into breath, presence, and inner stillness
Welcome to this gentle Prayer of the Heart teaching — a four‑session contemplative path rooted in breath, presence, and inner stillness. In this course, you will discover the foundations of Western meditation, the tradition of hesychasm, and simple practices that open the heart through breath, posture, and quiet repetition.
This four‑session teaching offers a progressive introduction to hesychasm — the way of stillness — through breath, posture, and the quiet opening of the heart.
Each session includes 10–12 minutes of guided meditation, allowing you to experience the practice directly and gently integrate it into your daily life.
What You Will Learn in the Prayer of the Heart Teaching
Session 1: Sources of the Prayer of the Heart Tradition
Origins, hesychasm, Philokalia
In this first session, we explore the foundations of the Prayer of the Heart:
- the origins of Western Christian meditation
- the tradition of hesychasm (“the way of stillness”)
- the Philokalia and its teachings on inner prayer
- the meaning of “praying with the heart”
We close with 10–12 minutes of guided meditation, introducing the breath as a doorway to presence.
Session 2 — Foundations of the Prayer of the Heart
Posture, embodiment, and theosis
This session deepens the physical and spiritual foundations of the practice:
- orientation of the body and inner gaze
- the role of breathing in contemplative prayer
- the invocation (explanation and meaning)
- posture and embodiment: being aligned, centered, and rooted
- theosis as a path of transformation
We end with 10–12 minutes of meditation, focusing on breath and inner alignment.
Session 3 — Entering the Prayer of the Heart Practice
Opening the heart & the four meditations
This session introduces the symbolic and experiential dimension of the practice. You will learn four contemplative meditations that open the heart and stabilize the inner space:
- Meditate like a mountain — stability and grounded presence
- Meditate like a poppy — softness, fragility, and openness
- Meditate like an ocean — depth, movement, and inner vastness
- Meditate like a dove — gentleness, breath, and peace
We close with 10–12 minutes of guided meditation inspired by these images.
Session 4 — Deepening the Prayer of the Heart
Opening the heart & hesychasm (continued)
In this final session, we explore two powerful contemplative archetypes:
- Meditate like Abraham — trust, surrender, and inner obedience
- Meditate like Yeshua — compassion, presence, and luminous simplicity
We end with 10–12 minutes of meditation, integrating breath, posture, and heart awareness into a unified practice.
