Driven out from Palestine, Mary Magdalene landed on the coast of Provence in 42AD, accompanied by Jesus’ close friends. She received the precious teachings of Jesus Himself, she was her favorite disciple. In the course of her long journey, she left her mark on the beginning of Christianity.

Join me on a sacred journey in the footsteps of Mary Magdalene. I invite you to meet the so-called Apostle to the Apostles in her many faces while visiting the sacred places full of her presence, even nowadays.

Magdalene sacred journeys
During the recent celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the dedication of the Basilica of Saint-Maximin, I attended a fascinating conference with renowned French forensic scientist Dr. Philippe Charlier. His research has helped reconstruct the face of the woman whose skull has been venerated here for centuries. There is also the extraordinary story of a lock of hair traditionally associated with Mary Magdalene raising new questions about its history. So, what can science really tell us about these relics? Can it confirm their identity? Challenge centuries of tradition? Or reveal just how much remains unknown?I’ve gathered the scientific findings, the historical context, and the questions that still deserve investigation in my new article:What Does Science Really Tell Us About the Relics of Mary Magdalene?Read the full article here: ...

Magdalene sacred journeys
Today, October 4, we celebrate Saint Francis of Assisi, the saint who embraced poverty, loved all creation, and sought God in silence and simplicity. But there is a lesser-known story that may resonate particularly with those who feel called to the sacred paths of Provence. His mother, Pica, was from Provence, the land of Saint Martha and Mary Magdalene. Some local traditions associate her origins with the region around Beaucaire and Tarascon, on the banks of the Rhône river.Could this maternal heritage have formed part of the spiritual and cultural world in which Francis grew up? We cannot know for certain, but it opens a fascinating window onto the connections between Provence and medieval Italy. And there is another remarkable thread: the presence of chapels dedicated to Mary Magdalene in several places associated with Francis's life.At Fonte Colombo, where Francis worked on the definitive version of his Rule in 1223, stands the small Chapel of the Magdalene, already existing in his time.In the valley of Rieti, a landscape of hermitages and contemplative retreats, the chapel preserves the memory of a devotion that accompanied the Franciscan world. These places invite us to look beyond borders and conventional histories, towards the spiritual landscape of medieval Europe, where devotion, pilgrimage and the longing for solitude connected distant regions.Francis's life was marked by a profound desire to follow Christ, to embrace humility, and to encounter the Divine in all living things. Mary Magdalene, too, remains for many a figure of inner transformation, love and spiritual awakening.I find it deeply moving to contemplate these converging paths: a saint whose mother was said to come from Provence, and Italian sanctuaries where the name of Mary Magdalene still echoes. From Tarascon to Assisi, the threads of the sacred continue to weave their quiet story.Art: Pietà with Saint Francis and Saint Mary Magdalene, Carracci Annibale 1600 / 1625 ...
