Your pilgrimage will lead you to Les Saintes Maries de la mer, in Camargue. That’s the place where the story of Mary Magdalene and her companions began, after their departure from Palestine.
After Jesus’crucifixion, Magdalene and her companions escaped from Palestine, crossing the Mediterranean sea and landed on the coasts of Provence. They left Palestine to flee the persecutions of Herod Agrippa I, who had reclaimed the throne of Jerusalem in 41 AD. They landed in Camargue between 43 and 45AD.

This story is called “The Provencal Tradition”. This is the way the Church explains the arrival of Mary Magdalene and her companions in Provence. The authenticity of this Tradition is the subject of controversy among scholars. Nevertheless, even if the reported facts were somewhat “embellished”, it cannot be denied that our Provençal land saw the arrival of the first Christians on its shores.
